In Search of... The Origin of Nations

We now enter the realm of the Shemites. Given that we have explored where the descendants of Ham and Japheth are located, let us examine Shem's descendants, their locations and characteristics. Firstly, what does his name mean? Driver explains that it means

" 'men of name' or 'distinction' - the titled or noble race ... perhaps nothing more than the ruling caste in opposition to the aborigines ... [some researchers compare it with] the name 'Aryan'.".1149

This may have something to do with the special blessing in Genesis 9:26: "Blessed be the Lord God of Shem." The above statement, according to Aalders, "implies that Shem would indeed be blessed, but this blessing would come only from the Lord"1150 if He had covenanted with them.

In verse 27 Moses wrote that "God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem and Canaan shall be his servant". While this may mean that Shem shall dominate Japheth, there is another meaning which should be explored at this point. Take time to examine the following scriptures: Ex 25:8; Num 9:15; 2 Sam 7:6; IChron 15:1; Ps 78:59-60; Is 40:22; Jer 10:20; Rev 21:3.

The clear inference is that God shall dwell with Shem as in a tabernacle. God did indeed do so with ancient Israel and He also dwells in spiritual Israelites through the holy spirit today. He has remained faithful to Israel ever since. Similar wording is used in relation to Israel in Is 54:2. Here we have what commentators so long ago described as 'the righteous line' or as we would say today, the lineage which God is working with.

Where were the Shemites located immediately after the Flood of Noah? Latest research suggests that they inhabited the land of Sumer before being displaced by the descendants of Ham. Scholars have wondered why the Sumerians are not mentioned in the Bible anywhere, with the exception of the land of Shinar referred to in Genesis and a few prophecies.1151

According to David Rohl in his Legend. The Genesis of Civilisation, linguistic studies by authorities such as Samuel Kramer (The Sumerians) and Arno Poebel (various works) demonstrate that the name Sumer or Shumer is remarkably similar to Shem:

"The [original] people of Sumer were designated 'Sumerians' after Shem, son of Noah, who was remembered as the eponymous ancestor of those who re-occupied biblical Shinar following the destruction of the antediluvian cities during the ... flood. The name Shumer is therefore an eponym."1152

After the tower of Babel incident, these people moved northward and the descendants of Cush moved into southern Arabia, east Africa, southern India, Melanesia and Australia as we have seen.

So, where are these people who descended from a man that God seemingly covenanted with? Which nations have been blessed with such awesome economies, fascinating accomplishments and cultures which other peoples marvel at?

What of the true history of European peoples? What of the West Europeans, Northern Europeans and East Europeans whom we have not as yet discussed in this book? Just what is the meaning of events in Central and Eastern Europe? And, most importantly, how might we interpret these astounding events in the light of the Bible?

In the closing years of the 1970s and in the early 1980s, I researched the perplexing question as to the origins of these fascinating peoples. It is evident that the average Anglo-Saxon-Kelt has no idea as to the deep rooted superstitions, ancient suspicions, national fervor and historical backgrounds of many of these European nations. The culture of central and eastern Europe is brilliant, yet their national personalities differ markedly from that of the north-west Europeans. Why is this so? This book attempts to demonstrate the origins of these peoples and answers many of our questions about them. This research will also afford us valuable insights into their future.

We shall undertake a journey tracing the Slavs, Nordics and Alpines from their original locations to their modern locations. It is not the aim of this section to present an outline of the history or a detailed analysis of these peoples. I do, however, recommend The Guide to the Peoples of Europe edited by Felipe Fernandez-Anneste; The Races of Europe by William Z Ripley (pp 335-435) and The Races of Europe by Carieton S Coon (pp 559-617).

The final chapters of this section address the Assyrians' location today. Given the importance of Assyrian in history and their relationship to Israel, they are very important to identify today. This series of chapters are of a size and relevance that they have been allocated their own sub-section out of necessity and neatness.

In this section we ask the question "Who are the Germans?" From which ancestor of Noah do they descend? May their roots be found in the ancient Middle East? Does the Bible —God's precious Word — have anything to say with regard to the very talented German peoples and their ancient roots? Or does God ignore major nations in His Word? We shall certainly see.

Could God's Word contain prophecies referring to Egypt, Libya or Arabia, but contain nothing about Germany and other modern nations? This is a nation of about 80 millions jammed into 356,854 km2. It has large cities - Berlin (3.9 million), Hamburg (1.6 million), Munich (1.3 million) and Cologne (0.9 million). (Britain has 57 million, France 56 million and Poland 38 million). Its export drive and power is paramount in Europe, far surpassing all other European nations.

Now united and with almost 80 million people, a formidable army and a potent export-driven economy, Germany again dominates Europe - an unnerving thought for some of its neighbours. No one can overlook their contributions to science, music and literature. Yet they have patterns of national behaviour which has caused terrible suffering for others over the centuries.

This book contends with accepted histories that the Assyrians just simply disappeared into thin air and that no trace may be found of them. Why? For God's inspired, sacred and eternal Word predicts that in these Last Days the Assyrians will once more be a power to be reckoned with. Barton-Payne, famous for his superb Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy admits that the prophecies concerning Assyria are yet future.1153 Another author, Arthur BtoomfiekL who wrote Last Days, likewise recognizes that the prophecies relating to Babylon and Assyria are in the future, but does not know where they are today. A.B. Davidson, author of Old Testament Prophecy admits that the prophecy

of Micah 5:6 "represented the Assyrian as existing in the time of the Messiah", but unfortunately concludes that the interpretation should be allegorical, not literal.1154

Given the above, let us explore ancient history and trace the migrations of the Assyrians to their modern locations, employing many quotes so as to inculcate this knowledge into the mind of the reader by being backed up by the historical record. Every attempt will be made to detail the fine grains of the historical record into a solid rock of essential knowledge. Then, let us see what their incredible future holds within the European Union, now rising and becoming a world power.
